Circus Express is a concept that uses live circus performance, community engagement and documentary format to engage with the history, the people, and places of Circus in a specific country and to share that engagement with the general public. Circus Express was born of a desire to better understand the routes of our art form, to draw a thread of continuity between that history, the current story of circus communities, and our own story across that country….a continuing adventure of circus life that links people, places and experiences.
Circus Express arrives, creates a show inspired by a specific moment in local circus history, creates a tour related to this history through a network of partnerships with local circus communities, and creates a documentary of the entire experience. At each stop Circus Express exchanges knowledge, stories and experiences, creates links, networks and new friends, and in partnership with the locals creates a community event celebrating local circus, current and past.

The Circus Express Format

Through the pilot, which is Circus Express USA, we will create a Circus Express format, with a show, a tour and a documentary aimed at a TV market.

  • Each country has its circus history
  • We study it
  • We create community partnerships and networks
  • We go
  • We make a show inspired by this history
  • We create a tour that relates to the history and the communities
  • We make a documentary about the experience
  • We give it for broadcast in the country
  • We write a story of the adventure

Circus Express USA

The pilot project of 4 years which will culminate in a small-scale touring show following the route of the first American circus to cross the country- The Dan Castello Circus, in 1869. Circus Express artists will work alongside local professional, youth and community circus artists, bringing a sense of celebration and collaboration to participants and audiences alike, as well as forming closer links between European and American circus communities.
